ABOUT ME
Continuing My Education and Advocacy for Others
My name is John Tuley, and I am a Senior a the University of Central Florida. I am a double major in legal studies and writing and rhetoric. I am going to go to pursue a J.D. and I hope to further my education with a PhD. in Higher Education. I want to work in higher education and politics to advocate for student needs and ensure that our educational and political systems have the resources they need and that these systems work for everyone, including the historically disenfranchised.
Over the past four years, I've been able to formulate my identity as a writer and speaker. As a competitor for the UCF Moot Court and Mock Trial Teams, I've been able to understand writing for a legal purpose and the power of oration. I've also demonstrated my research and critical thinking on contemporary legal issues in 2 published articles in UCF's Undergraduate Law Review-Journal. My time in the Writing and Rhetoric Major has allowed me to craft a writerly identity and focus on the power of audience and persuasion through writing.
My Focus in Writing
As a result of my academic experiences, I recognize that the place I'm in now is nowhere near where I would've imagined when I first stepped onto campus. One of the things I'm most proud of is my development and growth as an advocate for others. This includes the power of advocacy through writing and through oral argument which is both crucial to the legal profession. I also have developed a strong connection through research-based writing. In order to truly advocate on behalf of someone, you have to have all of the facts, and the ability to accurately articulate points and have the ability to back those points up. That's why research has become such a large part of my identity as a writer. Finally, through my time in the Writing and Rhetoric degree program, I've developed a stronger connection with design principles and the ability to tell stories in "non-traditional" methods through new media. This has opened up the mediums through which I can advocate and help others.
